WHO FINDS GOD?

WHO FINDS GOD?

The first sermon Jesus preached in Matthew chapter 5 was the famous “beatitudes” sermon. In it He tells what type of person finds the kingdom of heaven. It’s not an easy feat, especially in our current society that is full of lusts and deceptions.

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

So here’s a summary of three key attitudes:

THE HUMBLE. The first or perhaps the biggest hurdle to overcome, especially for prosperous Americans, is pride. You have to humble yourself as a child to approach the mighty king (though he loves you and is longing for you to do so).

…“God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time (1 Peter 5:5-6)

In his pride the wicked does not seek him (Psalms 10:4)

THE DILLIGENT. Since Satan is such a deceiver it’s not surprising to find so much deception in various religions and theories. Everything pertaining to the truth of God has many distortions. Some are attacks, some are imitations. You can’t make a half-hearted attempt at seeking the truth and you certainly can’t believe the surface of things or what you hear from mainstream sources. Pilgrim’s Progress is a classic book on this difficult journey (there’s a movie of it too). It’s an accurate portrayal of the Christian journey.

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6)

SINCERE TRUTH SEEKERS, regardless of the cost. They have to be willing to turn loose of some temporary (but harmful) pleasures of the world and receive persecution and rejection from their friends to please God. The truth is that these things are cheap, empty substitutes for far better things God would give them in return.

24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. (Hebrews 11:24-26, ESV) (read the whole chapter)

WHO FOR SURE DOESN’T FIND GOD? THOSE WHO DON’T WANT TO…

“I had motive for not wanting the world to have a meaning; consequently assumed that it had none, and was able without any difficulty to find satisfying reasons for this assumption. The philosopher who finds no meaning in the world is not concerned exclusively with a problem in pure metaphysics, he is also concerned to prove that there is no valid reason why he personally should not do as he wants to do, or why his friends should not seize political power and govern in the way that they find most advantageous to themselves. … For myself, the philosophy of meaninglessness was essentially an instrument of liberation, sexual and political.” Aldous Huxley was a grandson of ‘Darwin’s Bulldog’, T.H. Huxley. He was also the brother of the leading atheistic evolutionist Sir Julian Huxley

“the reason we lept at The Origin of Species was because the idea of God interfered with our sexual mores” Sir Julian Huxley

“Evolution is unproved and unprovable. We believe it only because the only alternative is special creation, and that is unthinkable” Sir Arthur Keith
